How One Minute of Meditation Changed My Life

Meagan Carlson | FEB 3

Have you ever had one minute that completely changed your life?

Five years ago, I had just had my first baby, and I was drowning in postpartum anxiety. This was unlike any anxiety I had ever experienced before — it was all-consuming and made me feel physically sick to my stomach, day in and day out. I was also dealing with the loss of external validation I had previously received from work, and as a lifelong high-achiever, my self-worth began to plummet. Depression slowly crept in, and I felt like a shell of myself, moving through the motions — completely miserable.

Postpartum Anxiety and Hitting Rock Bottom

One day, I found myself standing in the bathroom, looking at my reflection in the mirror, and I started to cry. I felt so low and helpless, unsure of how to pull myself out of the hole I was in. The universe has a funny way of showing up exactly when you need it, and in that darkest moment, a thought entered my mind — a thought I truly believe was placed there by the universe itself.

That thought was: “You should meditate.”

Discovering Meditation for the First Time

It honestly surprised me. I enjoyed attending yoga classes, but I wasn’t someone who meditated. The few experiences I’d had with meditation in the past felt awkward and even a little silly. It was something I never imagined myself being drawn to. But in that moment, I was desperate enough to try anything.

So I sat down on the edge of the tub, pulled out my phone, and searched “meditation for beginners” on YouTube. I don’t remember the exact track I listened to, but I do remember thinking, “I can do anything for one minute.”

And when I tell you that this one minute completely shifted my life, that would be an understatement.

Nervous System Regulation and the Power of One Minute

What I didn’t yet understand was that my anxiety had kept my body in a constant state of fight-or-flight. In that one minute — when I stepped away from worrying, closed my eyes, returned to my breath, and allowed myself to be fully present — my entire nervous system responded.

For the first time in months, my body downregulated into the parasympathetic, rest-and-digest state.

The physical and emotional response was immediate and profound. It felt like a million pounds had been lifted from my chest. For the first time in a long time, I could breathe again.

From Healing to Purpose: Why I Do This Work

That single minute of nervous system regulation launched me into the most beautiful journey of rebirth. It was the beginning of my healing — where I established a consistent meditation practice and found a supportive perinatal therapist to help me navigate postpartum anxiety and depression.

As I moved through motherhood, my meditation practice evolved alongside me, eventually helping me reconnect with my intuition, develop my spiritual gifts, and step fully into my soul’s purpose.

And that’s exactly what I do in my practice today.

I support others in experiencing deep rest through meditation, yoga, and reiki, helping them regulate their nervous systems, reconnect with their inner wisdom, and rediscover a sense of purpose and alignment in their lives.

Sometimes, all it takes is one minute — and a willingness to begin.
